Defense Authorization Bill Signed

Obama signed into law the $680 billion defense authorization bill for 2010. The bill provides for 30,000 soldiers a year above the baseline for fiscal 2010 through 2012, as well as an increase of roughly 8,000 Marines in fiscal 2010.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced that he supports accelerating funding to expand the Army and Marines before the rest of the 2010 budget is complete.

Budget Outline Expands Army, Marine Corps

The administration's budget outline, released Feb. 26, supports more permanent forces in the Army and Marine Corps. By the end of 2009, the Army would see an increase to 547,400 and the Marine Corps 202,000.
