Defense Budget Raised Despite Spending Freeze

President Obama made the Department of Defense exempt from his proposed spending freeze, and his budget proposal for the fiscal year 2011 would raise the department's budget by 3.4 percent to $708 billion if approved by Congress.

In a teleconference explaining the Quadrennial Defense Review, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy stressed the "need to preserve and enhance the all-volunteer force as a core component of our strategy."
