State Department Venturing Into Online Arena

The State Department is reaching out online using a variety of methods, from expanding and revamping its Web sites to making greater use of social media, including setting up its own network, ExchangesConnect.

State has some recent experience venturing into online territory. In the last days of the Bush administration, undersecretary James K. Glassman debated eight Egyptian bloggers in the virtual world Second Life. Of the 200 people who took part, 45 percent were from the Middle East.
