Obama Creates CCS Task Force

A task force including representatives from 14 government agencies will aim to open five to 10 carbon capture and storage demonstration projects by 2016 and develop affordable CCS technologies within 10 years, according to a presidential memorandum Obama issued today.

According to the memo, the task force must develop a plan within six months. No additional funding was announced with the task force.

U.S., China Direct Joint Funds to CCS

Research and development of clean coal technology, especially carbon capture and sequester (CCS), has been given priority in the new Clean Energy Research Center, a joint venture announced by President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao. The center will be supported by both public and private funding of at least $150 million over five years, evenly divided between the two nations.

The presidents also announced several joint projects between American and Chinese companies that are developing CCS technologies, including one between General Electric and Shenhua Corporation.

House Bill Devotes $60 Billion To CCS

Of the $190 billion Waxman-Markey devotes to clean energy technologies and efficiency measures, $60 billion of that goes to carbon capture and sequester technology. The House passed the bill by a vote of 219-212.
