Obama Appoints Sudan Envoy
Obama has tapped Maj. Gen. J. Scott Gration, a Swahili-speaking retired Air Force officer, as his envoy to Sudan. The Sudanese government expelled humanitarian organizations from the Darfur region earlier this month after the International Criminal Court issued a war crimes indictment against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. Five lawmakers wrote Obama last week, encouraging him to make an appointment. |

Clinton Backs Bashir Indictment
After the International Criminal Court announced an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir earlier this week, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton backed the indictment, saying that if Bashir thinks he has been wrongly accused of crimes against humanity, he can "have his day in court." |

Rice To The U.N.
Obama's pick for ambassador to the U.N., Susan Rice, has worked on African issues for the Clinton administration and the Brookings Institution. During her confirmation hearing, she called it "unacceptable" that the international peacekeeping force in Darfur is at only half its authorized strength, but suggested that the cost of a U.S. mission to the region would be prohibitive. |
