Lenders Place Moratoria On Foreclosures For Holidays

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Citibank are some of the lenders that are suspending foreclosures over the holiday season, the Argus Leader report. Throughout the year, lenders have taken it upon themselves to grant moratoria on foreclosures.

HUD Grants Foreclosure Moratorium ... But Only For Part Of Alaska

Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan grants residents of Alaska's Kodiak Island Borough a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures on Federal Housing Authority insured mortgages in response to a disaster in the area.

Number Of Foreclosures Still Rising

According to foreclosure properties tracker RealtyTrac, the number of foreclosures in the U.S. has continued to rise since May. However, the administration has still established no moratorium on foreclosures.

Foreclosure Moratorium Left Out Of Housing Plan

President Obama's $75 billion Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan does not include a moratorium on foreclosures. Since November, institutions such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and PNC have taken it upon themselves to enforce their own moratoria in response to the crisis, and the Office of Thrift Supervision has called on the institutions it regulates to maintain a moratorium until the housing program is finally put in place.
