Obama Signs Law Allowing Advanced Appropriations For VA

Obama signed the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act of 2009 into law, allowing advance appropriations authority for certain parts of the Veterans Affairs budget.

The conference version of the budget resolution, passed by both chambers, allows advanced appropriations for medical services, support and compliance, and facilities.

Obama Supports Bill To Create Advance Funding

After a meeting with veterans advocacy groups, Obama expressed his support for legislation that would let Veterans Affairs funding be allocated one fiscal year in advance. The budget resolution passed by the Senate includes language that would change the approporiations structure for the department. Senate Veterans Affairs Chairman Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, has introduced S. 423, which also aims to secure timely funding.
